She sent some faecal samples away for a 1yr 4 month old cat with intermittent chronic loose faeces, sometimes with blood in them.
It came back as +ve for Cryptosporidium spp

Re: Tylosin in cats??

I think most people would think that the relative impossibility of dosing tylosin is justification for using other things. Actually working it out an average cat would need something like 1/64th of a teaspoon which would be pretty hard to do. I'm not aware that anybody has used the injectible orally or that there is much info on repeated objections in cats.

after all most people use generic metronidazole without too many cascade concerns...

Re: Tylosin in cats??

Can I suggest a course of B12 jabs? We had a similar cat a year or two ago, which didn't respond to anything. I can't remember exactly what we cultured but I know we tried all sorts, but the b12 did the job. And yes it was also on a restricted diet for ages...

Re: Tylosin in cats??

Does anyone use halofuginone in cats? Remembering that a product licensed for same condition in another species (Halocur) or another veterinary licensed product (Tylan) trump the human drugs. Is it ok to circumvent the cascade because a human drug is easier?

Why not inject the Tylan into the cat? Why not inject Tylan solution into gelatin capsules if it must go orally? Can you orally dose a cat with a made up Tylan solution? Chickens drink it.

Re: Tylosin in cats??

If you can access it there is a useful review article in Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice (2005). Issue 35 (1) Pg 81-88. Entitled Enteric Protozoal Diseases which summarises the treatment of Crypto.

Essentially it summarises that there is no treatment that reliably eradicates crypto but that the drugs that people try are Paromomycin, Azithromycin and Tylosin. Personally I would therefore choose azithromycin based on it being the easiest to get hold of and dose.

I would, however, emphasise that the role of this in the cats disease is questionable. You could also repeat the PCR now and see if it is still there - in theory it should self resolve in a few weeks (unless immunosuppressed) so you might find it is now negative anyway and you can get on looking for other things - as Anthony says probably diet.

The lab and textbooks gave me the doses but didn't give any info on how to practically do it!!

Azithromycin... this hadn't been mentioned to me by the lab, and don't think I saw it in textbook. It doesn't mention that it treats crypto specifically in the formulary, do you know how effective it is? Would this be your drug of choice then?

Re: Tylosin in cats??
Ha ha! In all seriousness, the cat is on I/d and the owner has noticed some improvement. When she puts it back on it's normal James Wellbeloved the faeces are much worse. Ultimately it is likely to be a food sensitivity. But if something like crypto is found which COULD cause these symptoms and COULD be zoonotic, do I just ignore the results from the test that my colleague chose to run? Or do I trial treatment for crypto and if no improvement then do my strict food trial?

ps. the owner is high maintenance and it's already looking bad that I have no clue how to treat what we've found in her cat's faecal samples!!

Re: Tylosin in cats??
How do you measure out the tiny amounts of powder needed?? I'm not sure we have microgram scales... (sorry if this is a silly question!)
The method described is based on the fact that (using the 100g per bottle Tylan soluble) one level teaspoon full (approx 5ml) is approximately 2.5g. Each cat would therefore roughly need somewhere between 1/16th and 1/32th of teaspoon. You can't do it exactly without pharmacy scales (and even then it would be incredibly fiddly!

Personally I think it is too fiddly to be worthwhile when alternatives exist.

Has anyone used tylosin in cats before? If so how do you measure out the powder, administer it? How long can you keep it made up with water for (was thinking I could work out a dilution or something)? Open to any other suggestions, especially as we don't keep Tylan here and would have to order itt in specially!
We use empty gelatin capsules and fill them with powder - size 2 for cats I think.

Re: Tylosin in cats??

Hi Rebecca,

Azithromycin (10mg/kg PO q24h for 2 weeks - sometimes longer) is another reported treatment for Crypto and is likely to be easier to get hold of so I would go for that first.

I would, however, make sure that the owner understands that the Crypto may not be the cause of this cats problems. Faecal PCR tests are very sensitive and so the significance of the findings can be questionable, and Crypto is often self limiting in many cats. So, I think it is prudent to treat (you don't want the owner getting Crypto!) but you may need to look at other things if it doesn't resolve.
