Any isdeas what to use instead? I find dentisept paste great for dogs but cats go nuts frothing and howling. has anyone tried the human Corsodyl?

Re: Petdent gel
On the last dental seminar I went to which was by Norman Johnson he dismissed all such additives and suggested that only thing that helped apart from effective brushing was Dentastix, I'm interested to hear what Evelyn has to say on this.
Norman can be opinionated but on the whole I agree with him. Except about Dentastix. They do a little bit I suppose, varying with the individual, but also make the client think the teeth must be OK, because "he gets his Dentastix every morning" – and quite often they aren't. There are of course several other similar chews to this highly-promoted expensive one and they all have the same pros and cons. Remember they are all food material and make a notable contribution to calorie intake too!

The chew material that really does some good is rawhide, which is available in a quite astonishing range of shapes and sizes. That's the stuff to get. You don't want to see the dog consuming it, you want to see him working away at it.

For cats? Bits of raw meat and gristle.

Meanwhile, I did try Dentisept for a while but found clients universally rejected it as too difficult to apply. Shoved into sockets and down deep gingival pockets post dental prophylaxis seems to be it best use.

Re: Petdent gel
We are getting great results from dechra's dentagen aqua water supplement, added once daily and fresh water after if all consumed. 3 and 6 month dental checks are pretty much scale free and very much periodontally clean...has reduced repeat dental but oral health and owner satisfaction much improved. Staff report excellent palatability with their own pets - consumption equal to fresh water previously offered. Like dentisept in dogs but agree is a non-starter in cats...compliance will be zero within a week!

Never noticed it being gritty. I would sent that tube back.

Re: Petdent gel

I used the petdent gel for gingivitis in cats and dogs that won't allow brushing. The ones where you've done a decent scale and polish but the animal won't tolerate brushing. I've not found hexarinse the easiest to use, but maybe I'm doing to wrong. The dentisept is sort of gritty and quite hard to apply, but it does stick to the teeth pretty well. I've only tried on 2-3 cats but it didn't go down well. I put some on a cat in consult to show the owner how easy it was. Does anyone remember those foam parties at nightclubs when you get covered in foam and it's supposed to be fun? Well it was kinda like that.

Re: Petdent gel

Did you mean specifically for a chlorhexidine medication, or for more general universal application?

There's Virbac's enzymatic toothpaste (the dog one is a paste but the cat one is a clear gel which of course you can apply to both dogs and cats).

Maxi-Guard (Maxi-Gard?) is a zinc ascorbate based gel.

Dentisept is something I've just been talked into trying by the rep.. She said it was a chlorhexidine gel but much stickier than the usual, However now the two tubes I generously ordered have arrived, I see from the ingredients that it's a paste apparently paraffin-based. Thanks for the report about that, Suzanne.
