Message from our MSD rep was you can use Bravecto off license but at standard dose (ie one tablet every 12 weeks). Seems far too easy for me but am assured it's what's being done in America...

Here in Australia the product of choice is dectomax which is a 10mg/ml doramectin injection given once weekly for 4 weeks before repeat scraping. (first dose 0.3mg/kg, following doses 0.6mg/kg)

Taktic has 125mg/ml amitraz rather than 50mg/ml but is the same drug, you just need to adjust the dilutions,

BSAVA formulary says 300-600ug/kg sid

= 0.3-0.6mg/kg

Panmec is 1% solution so 10mg /ml

so 0.03-0.06ml/kg

so 0.48 - 0.96ml /16kg

which I think is where the 1ml/16kg dose came from - start at half this and work up to full 1ml/16kg

but somebody check my maths please as it was never my strong point!

Apparently (which is probably code for anecdotally) you can use Bravecto for Demodex. Don't know any more about that but have the rep in next week so will find out! Alternatively ivermectin always used to work well, and you can do an MDR gene test now if you're concerned about reactions.

Me too. From memory 1ml Panomec/16kg daily, but start at half the dose and work up gradually over a couple of weeks.

Check that dose though, could be totally wrong.

I use Advocate fortnightly for 3 treatments to satisfy cascade, then when that doesn't work, oral ivermectin.

The data sheet for advocate says it can be used more often than monthly under vet supervision, but it has never worked for me.

It was obviously sponsored by a company that is looking to bring out the holy grail of dog anti-parasite treatment, which will do all Advocate does plus ticks and tapeworm but in tablet form.

However interesting that is it is not the point. We were universal in our condemnation of the ability of Advocate to treat demodex and of Fipronil to kill fleas. But there's another story.

I appreciate that, but what concerns me is that the dog has developed this despite being regularly treated with Advocate! So not really a great advert for its protective effects and doesnt make me inclined to want to use it for treatment! But thanks anyway!

You can get Milbemycin as a stand-alone ingredient (Interseptor). It needs an import licence but is a lot less expensive than Milbemax, Call Novartis for information.

If not a collie type then daily oral ivermectin or daily Milbemax but very expensive.
