I have been giving intramuscular injections in rabbits for neutering for a while now and never had any problems, however I have heard that some vets don't like doing this as there have apparently been reports of muscle necrosis.
Hi

I use dom/torb/ket I/m into the lumbar muscles and have never had any problems. The rabbit is well supported and the injection given slowly with an orange needle, we rarely get a reaction to injection itself and,so far have seen no injection site reactions. Metacam is given p/o at admit, if we do inject it is given s/c laterally just behind the shoulder - I found this site works so much better (after the skin reactions of cylap etc) for all s/c injections.

[/quote]

I second this. We use 0.1ml per kg domitor, 0.05ml per kg torb and ketamine given as above. We give metacam, emeprid and fluids on recovery all given sc.

Re: Intramuscular injections in rabbits

I have never had any problems with IM injections but I don't use ketamine routinely. The only reactions I have ever seen are with Cylap VHD vaccination and baytril injection both given SC with subsequent skin necrosis. As a result we have never used injectable baytril in bunnies and use the combined Myxi/VHD vaccine.
