Increasing numbers of Chihuahua's etc coming in, all weighing less than a cat.
Does anyone have a pre-med recommendation for these. I've used ACP and Buprenorphine, but the amounts are tiny and it's quite tricky to inject 0.03ml S/C as you're

Re: Pre-meds for small dogs

Choice may also depend on the procedure but I used 0.1ml/10kg detomidine + 0.1ml/10kg butorphanol today on a 3.4kg dog for umbilical hernia repair as it was a very bouncy puppy! Worked beautifully, nice and relaxed for a catheter placement and lovely smooth GA and recovery. However, I have also used ACP + butorphanol/buprenorphine with good effect in other cases.

Re: Pre-meds for small dogs

Dom/torb. You need higher doses of alpha 2 - it really should be dosed by body surface area.

We use 0.1ml/10kg of each usually, but <10kg I will double the aplha 2

Re: Pre-meds for small dogs

Midazolam instead of ACP?

Re: Pre-meds for small dogs

I tend to still use Vetergesic and ACP in small dogs, mixed in the same syringe, just make sure you draw up the larger volume of Vetergesic before the tiny volume of ACP. I find it works very well. Castrated a 3.5kg dog this morning, pre-med of 0.25ml Vetergesic and 0.05ml ACP and he was nicely relaxed for induction of GA.

Re: Pre-meds for small dogs

I tend to find dom/torb premed does not work very well in these small dogs.
