Our current patient presented 4 days ago obstructed with severe post-renal azotaemia and hyperkalaemia. Following treatment and diuresis his bloods from today are normal

Re: NSAIDs post urethral obstruction?

I'd be happy with nsaids at this stage if renal parameters normal, would avoid beforehand.

Re: NSAIDs post urethral obstruction?
Out of curiosity, why would anyone not consider it appropriate to use anti-inflammatories - NSAID's or glucocoricoids?
Sorry I think I was at cross purposes. i was thinking of reducing urethral pain and/or spasm.

Can't see any reason not to use the above drugs particularly if combined with local treatment to relieve the probable urethral trauma and discomfit.

Re: NSAIDs post urethral obstruction?
Sent 'em hope straight away,
If a catheter was left in, you always got an infection or the catheter was chewed. And i think a lot of them got a stricture in the urethra afterwards too as they often recurred.

Sent 'em hope straight away, flushed if not peeing, taught the owner to express/encourage the cat to pee on its own in its usual place, that's when the flushing was needed, saw them back every day until OK.

Re: NSAIDs post urethral obstruction?
At what stage in this presentation would you consider it appropriate (if at all) to use NSAIDs?
EMLA cream - if you have to, but not much fun for the cat while conscious. I'd be treating with systemics first.
Er, I speak with some experience....

You can get Xylocaine gel for that exact purpose in humans, used to use Panolog which worked well although I think a local might be even better.

The trick. I found is to deaden the tip of the penis first with local and using an I/V cannula about 20 or 22G works a treat..
I could see a place for this as you unblock and catheterise the cat. But this is 4 days later, bloods are normal. Keep on buprenorphine, add in Metacam. The cat will be much happier. Is the catheter still in? Maybe time to remove it?
