Finadyne transdermal - seems like a good idea and the blurb from MSD seems very good but then doesn't it always.

Re: Topical NSAIDs in cattle

Not terribly convincing is it? Maybe slightly (but not much) easier to administer than an injection, but more expensive, and at 1ml/15kg you don't get many doses out of a bottle. Maybe useful in the odd animal you can't get near to inject. Interesting idea though.

Re: Topical NSAIDs in cattle

I very much doubt there would be a move to make this a POM-VPS. There seems to be a little bit of interest in movement in the other direction from a few companies at the moment.

Just for ease of use it might make a few more farmers a little more keen to use a NSAID.

I must admit I'm not totally convinced either way on this one. Time will tell.

Re: Topical NSAIDs in cattle

Personally, I don't think it's an idea with legs, apart perhaps from treating mardy bulls with needle phobias (I.e. all of them).

Unless.

It's the first step in a relicensing drive to go for POM-VPS. But that would involve a drug company selling us out and that'd never happen.

Re: Topical NSAIDs in cattle

List price is made up. I compared on a net net basis - allowing for discount on the new product.

Looking again it's not quite 4X the flunixin price more like 3X - I'd done the sums with 20ml when really the dose for a 600kg cow is 26.6ml.

Are you in a buying group?

Personally I'd found more reluctance in farmers to use NSAIDs nothing against actually injecting them.

Bute is well under 50p a sachet!

Re: Topical NSAIDs in cattle

Hi Michael - I thought you might be the first to reply.

I suspect there may be a fair amount of off licence use initially. I'm told they are working on a licence for other indications which should be with us in the near future.

Based on NVS list prices it seems fairly comparable to most other NSAIDs from what I can see. What are you basing your pricing on for these?. Obviously Finadyne is cheaper but it isn't a massive seller anyway.

I'm not saying that I see it as a major product but I suspect there will be some uptake. We had a discussion with a few of our farmers at a meeting on BVD and IBR yesterday and their consensus seemed positive. I would agree that in most cases there will still be the need for some form of injection with does negate the main benifit of the product somewhat. Whilst MSD are recommending the use of gloves and goggles do you honestly see many of your clients wearing these?

I certainly agree that a 50p a sachet product for cattle would be wonderful - fingers crossed it will happen eventually.

Re: Topical NSAIDs in cattle

Our rep hasn't even mentioned it to me yet! I heard about it online.

Alan - what could you see as an indication? For a single dose of NSAID you are looking at nearly 4X the cost of injectable generic flunixin, and 50% more than a generic meloxicam injection.Once you donned your gloves, goggles and protective clothing!

I'm not sure I can think of a case where I would want to give it without injecting something (only licensed for BRD use, so giving antimicrobials too).

If we had a product, like bute for horses, that could be given daily and cost 50p a sachet that would make one hell of a difference - giving a lame cow a decent course of NSAIDs.

I just don't see where it fits.

(I'm not good at this game - I told Pfizer Naxcel wouldn't sell......)
