Has been fed on dried shrimps, lettuce, crushed egg shell, tuna, apple. Lives in a tank with a UVB light which is regularly changed (though not sure

Re: Terrapin with puffy eyes

Thanks for your input, Marie. These guys do have a more irregular shell with the dorsal and peripheral ridges but I agree shell quality looks less than ideal with the raised areas within the scutes and the ?cracks on the left side in the bottom photo. The hyperaemia of the plastron suggests a widespread inflammatory process and possible sepsis. As Gillian says it needs a full work up as it likely has multiple problems associated with the secondary effects of poor husbandry.

Referring on sounds a wise plan,

It isn't just the excess of algae- which tells you the water quality is bad and it is doing too little basking - but it also appears grooved and 'knobbly'. Looks like a very sick turtle to me.

Re: Terrapin with puffy eyes

[quote user="Julian Earl"]

That shell looks awful.

Probably a multitude of problems, but likely due to awful husbandry. If it is a map ( hard to be 100% from photos) they need really good water quality with good oxygenation and ideally fast flow!!! You don't mention a basking area..??

Have a look at some photos and husbandry requirements on Dr Google and feel free to post any specific questions.

If the owner wants to do what's best, then this turtle needs bloods and xrays to give you some info about its health... Otherwise it is simply guesswork.

Re: Terrapin with puffy eyes

It is almost certainly hypovitamosis A but consider an Iodine deficiency as well with what looks a bit like myxoedema at the forelimb junctions.
