It was initially seen by our OOH provider and 200ml of pus drained and was given a Convenia injection. I saw it the next day and withdrew another 40ml pus, a sample of which I sent for culture direct

Re: Malassezia as a cause of pyothorax? - you're kidding!
If you are worried about a fungal pyothorax the cytology of the exudate would be spectacular - seen crypto before in an import - but crypto a much larger organism than malassezia
I did cytology in house and the product of the thoracocentesis was packed with neutrophils and numerous gram +ve cocci no yeast or crypto seen!

It is almost certain that despite preparation of the site the sample was contaminated by Malassezia from the skin or contamination in the lab but I just wondered if anyone else had come across this before.

Re: Malassezia as a cause of pyothorax? - you're kidding!
More likely convenia affecting culture result surely?!

My thoughts exactly.
Well yes obviously the Convenia could have prevented bacterial growth on culture but that doesn't explain where the Malassezia came from.

It could have come from anywhere, including lab error.
