A quick telephone call ascertained the bitch had no known access to rodenticide or other blue foods. I didn't fancy the spay

Re: To spay or not to spay?

Thanks guys, my first opinion was along the do no harm route, but as I've had some time to mull things over, I think I might have a chat with owner on Monday and book her in for surgery.

Re: To spay or not to spay?

I think I would be happy enough going ahead with a spay after 3-5days vitK tablets (to be continued a week or 2 post-op) as a precaution whether or not the OSPT was elevated (I don't think this additional vitK would carry any significant risk).

Obviously owner has to sign off on potential increased risk (even though I don't reckon much risk).

Re: To spay or not to spay?

Another who's thinking that something blue (? toxic) has been ingested.

If she has eaten that she's probably quite ill by now. Of course she could have eaten something blue, no food colouring/fingerpaint/ smurf winegums missing? I certainly wouldn't rush into spaying her if there is any doubt about poisoning, but I guess you didn't plan to do it over the weekend anyway, and by monday the situation should be much clearer, either the dog is ill or whatever blue it had eaten has passed through.

Re: To spay or not to spay?

First do no harm - personally I wouldn't touch this surgically until I was 100% certain of the situation. I don't know the risks of using Alizin here, but would certainly seek advice on using it first. Whelping whilst not necessarily desirable may still be the safest option.

I would suggest a call to the VDS or similar would be a good move prior to any treatment too.
