Exactly the sort of info I was looking for.
Much obliged.
Will get an order in for Prascend ASAP then... before he gets laminitis!

Re: Polydipsic 19yo warmblood gelding

Polydipsia is generally defined as water intake over 100ml/kg/day. PPID and CRI would be the top two suspect - both easily tested for.

The ACTH is generally seen as a better test for PPID now and I don't know anyone routinely using LDDST anymore. At that level that's a pretty strong positive test. As Michael says if you tested recently the upper normal is 47 and you're pretty much double that. Any of my client's horses with that sort of result would be straight onto pergolide. The normal ACTH level varies seasonally so in the Autumn anything over 47 is abnormal, for the rest of the year it is 29. This is a particularly good time of year to test so if your result isn't recent I'd do another one now anyway. Any horses that are equivocal on an ACTH test get a TRH stimulation test (Liphook can help you with this and provide the TRH).

I'd also run a glucose tolerance test - this is very simple. Fast the horse overnight, then give 1g/kg glucose in a chaff feed and take a plain blood to measure serum insulin 2hrs later.

Re: Polydipsic 19yo warmblood gelding

Is he hairy? I know it is seasonally adjusted, but 92 sounds high (I thought they used a lower cut off in summer).

Why LDDS and urinalysis?? I'd start on Prascend if it was my horse.

(what was the cut off on your report?)
