I usually use pet dent chlorhexidine gel pre / post dentals and for gingivitis as it seems well tolerated and does what I need it to, especially in cats. I've found dentisept hopeless and having tried it I can understand why.
Yes - always struck me as highly dubious.

The way dogs and cats lap - surely it just goes over the back of the tongue and straight down the hatch. Not as if Rover is going to swill it around the mouth and gargle for a minute.

Not sure if many are using it but we have seen massive imporvements in oral health since recommending use of 'dentagen aqua' in drinking water (dechra). Palatability is good, risk to owner in administering into sore mouths nil and clinical results promising so far. Have had better results with dentisept for skin folds/wounds than oral problems but better than nothing - apply with applicator or cotton buds and keep away from water!

If truly uncontrollable discomfort then I might suggest a dental procedure / euthanasia.

I've had a few ancient cats suddenly die over the last 15 years 1-7d post anaesthetic (normal blood tests before often as not) and am concerned that I might have missed a thrombus in these. Probably straying OT here.

Thanks for the info regarding taste of the human products. I might prefer them to my cat. ISTR my old dog hated minty odours / flavours!

You could try Virbac's cat toothpaste, which is actually a gel not a paste. It's not chlorhexidine but its antibacterial action seems to be genuine. Or use rinses (but cats often hate those too.....)

There's a gel from the US containing zinc gluconate and ascorbic acid that ain't bad.... the name escapes me at the moment but it's often advertised in JVD.

I think certain people here are being very unfair in accusing you of using chlorhexidine as a substitute for proper diagnosis and treatment – I see no indication at all of that in your posts.(I'm mildly puzzled by the mention of "periods between prophylaxis" in "chronic gingivitis" but that's something that would be a long and rambling debate). And I can't agree that "antibiosis post dental" is a proper treatment, if "antibiosis" is intended to mean (erroneously) "administration of an antibiotic drug" .

On the other hand,

There is no such thing in our practice. Have fixed many manky old mouth when others have said 'too old' etc. Never had any negative consequences, only huge positive benefit.
I'd agree with that, on the whole.

Re: Chlorhexidine
Another use for me is in patients where anaesthesia is contraindicated to improve oral comfort.
All cats with gingivitis that have a scale and polish will get oral rads (adds £30 to our fees so why not). I find that this seems to mean less inflammation and bleeding.

I'll also use as an adjunct to mechanical methods (please no RMB comments) in both cats and dogs with chronic gingivitis to extend periods between prophylaxis.

Another use for me is in patients where anaesthesia is contraindicated to improve oral comfort. I've found a few geriatric diabetics particularly seem to have benefitted.
