Initially presented with abdo discomfort, vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia. Initially suspected pancreatitis so blood samples taken and IVFT given. I see a lot - that's because dogs regard seagull droppings as caviare - and the Bristol channel is heavily poluted! Others may see very little.

the owner is complaining Should we have taken faecal sample earlier?
Why are you taking a faecal sample from my dog? Do you think I ain't treat my dog right because I feed him raw meat? Bl**dy vets, just want money and to acuse/judge me of my dog illness
This dog is on raw food. This client is not happy,

should this case have been handled differently?
HOW?!?!

You may find the ACVIM consensus statement on enteropathogenic bacteria useful.

In answer to your question I think it is difficult to know the significance of campylobacter in these cases as the isolation rate is fairly similar in dogs with and without diarrhoea. However in an older dog I think it more likely that this is not significant. I certainly wouldn't be critical of it not being identified earlier as it may well not have been found at another time and may well not be found if you culture again now.

I am a bit more likely to culture in dogs who are on raw diets as we have seen both salmonella and camplylobacter in these cases.
