Even if you can't find the mites on scrapes I would use advocate to be sure to rule it out. Puppy came in for a ghc-I initially suspected cheyletiella (wasn't typically dry scurfy but due to age of puppy) so didn't do a skin scrape for demodex, just did a sellotape slide. Asked owners to ring breeder to see whether any recent tx etc then we would discuss in a few hours re tx....no cheyletiella found (surprisingly) so was looking at the other options, hence the mention of demodex.

Re: Anti-histamines in puppy

Cheylettiella would be my top guess. Easy to find on a scraping unless already treated with a spot-on even then you can see the eggs. Classically thick crusty, scaling especially over the dorsum.

Re: Anti-histamines in puppy

I would have thought a bit too young for demodecosis to have progressed this far.
a skin scrape takes a few minutes and if you suspect demodex it should have been done in the initial consultation surely? Never treat for demodex without confirming - amitraz is pretty potent, and probably you can't use it on a pup that age anyway, but sarcoptes is different. Much harder to prove, much easier to treat!

At this stage i would skin scrape, start suitable antibiotics and malaseb shampoo, then advocate so long as the pup is heavy enough - minimum 1kg - sorry can't remember age limits.

If the client is dithering about treating this either they bought it from a crap breeder or they are likely to be crap owners - I feel sorry for the pup
