The owner is reluctant to do anything with it but at the same time wants to know it is not malignant(!) It is slowly growing but does appear to be growing

Re: Ocular mass in a dog
Yes it does!

Thank you so much for everyone's reply, that's been really helpful. I can't upload the picture for some reason but feel fairly confident now that it is a cyst.

Is yearly monitoring at vaccination reasonable or should I be checking it more frequently? Is there any need to check iop regularly or is it fair to just intervene if changes are noted by the owner?

Thanks everyone, holly :-)

Re: Ocular mass in a dog
melanoma is unusual in dogs - most solid iris masses are melanocytoma
Not something I've had to think about ever.

What's the difference between a melanoma and a melanocytoma?

Serious question.

Re: Ocular mass in a dog

Also as Ida says.

Ultrasound will confirm a fluid filled mass if you are still not convinced. If they become too numerous or large then vision can be affected but aspiration or laser ablation will resolve them. Occasionally they burst and adhere to the corneal endothelium.

As an aside iris melanoma is unusual in dogs - most solid iris masses are melanocytoma and they can be lasered or excised from the iris and the eye and vision preserved.

Re: Ocular mass in a dog

does it look like http://davidlwilliams.org.uk/?p=141

Re: Ocular mass in a dog

Is it attached to the iris or floating free?

My own dog has a detached iris cyst which floats around in her anterior chamber. If I tip her head right back it moves about. Entirely benign if that is the case. You may be able to see them float around. They tend to sit ventrally at 6 o'clock. Larger ones may sit higher. Do not enucleate. Refer for an opinion.

All the best,

Iris cysts? - does it look like a solid mass? Nb Intraocular melanomas can be quite slow growing and less aggressive than melanomas in other sites. But they can be locally invasive. The last one I saw was in a westie and it had eroded through the sclera - dog presented covered in black down its face to the extent that it looked like someone had thrown oil over it
