I saw a dog this morning that has a small white opacity in the centre of it's cornea. Fluoro negative, but you can almost see a slight blister/bubble around the opaque lesion, and another bubble within the cornea just

Re: Bandage Contact Lenses

[quote user="Michael Woodhouse"]

However as Busybee suggests the problem is getting them to stay in (even with a Buster collar to stop them dislodging the lens pawing at the side of the face) and after my beginner's luck I had a long run of animal's losing them plus a number that had to be sedated to insert them.

Busybee suggests using her own but they are quite breed/size specific and I found getting the size right was quite critical so she must have some standard sized animals. I got to the point that having to have several sizes in stock (although you can order individual lenses now), having to replace a lot and in a number having to knock them out to insert them that it was counter productive and I went back to good old debridement with a cotton bud and grid keratectomy with a hypodermic needle (not had the courage to use a dental burr yet).

I am just about to try Remend Corneal Repair Gel for the first time on a persistent ulcer in a Staffie whose owner is reluctant to have surgery. I'll keep you all posted on success of this. However I had all but forgotten about bandage lenses and they may be an alternative in this patient if the gel doesn't work.

Re: Bandage Contact Lenses

Yes, I have often used contact lenses to act as 'bandage', though I do not use the £50/lens veterinary ones, I use my own! They work just as well but cost just pence. The trickiest bit is getting them to stay in, especially in a big dog. They work great in cats. I can often fit them in a conscious animal using local drops and very gentle use of dressing forceps to get under the third eyelid if required.
