We have a guinea pig that has chelitis that has failed to respond to oral baytril, septrin and injectable ivermectin. The clients don't want to culture the lesions and I was considering topical meds- has anyone used surolan, canaural or nystatin

Re: Chelitis in guinea pig
It's the first time I've ever used the forums and am amazed at the replies!
it looks like the typical GP crusting cheilitis. It may well be viral but no-one has proved the inciting cause. It tends to clear up over a few weeks given no secondary infections. Avoid acidic foods, keep the skin clean and try not to pick at it too much!!

F10 germicidal cream is oily and helps reduce skin cracking and soreness and is also bactericidal/viricidal/fungicidal so may help treat primary and secondary factors and seems to speed recovery in my experience.

What's their objection - cost? It's probably already cost them the price of a culture three times over with trial and error! I bet they'd be the ones to complain if the pig goes belly up because you guessed the medication and it had a reaction. Grrrr...

Re: Chelitis in guinea pig

Have you got pictures of the lesions? They might help us to get a better idea of what is going on. If you can't do a culture can you do in-house cytology to assess whether you are seeing bacteria or yeasts? I would avoid anything that contains steroids. But maybe some metacam will settle inflammation and make it more comfortable. Is there excessive salivation? Have you assessed the teeth properly for underlying dental problems?

Re: Chelitis in guinea pig

The last one I cultured Candida from, went on Daktarin (miconazole) cream.
