Some help would be appreciated with mystery case of the week. 16-20 week old bunny brought to us by Pets at Home with one eye that seems to have a rather enlarged anterior chamber. PLR intact, retina looks ok, some patchy fluoro uptake

Re: Bulging rabbit eye - pictures included
We have one tonopen between 4 branches and end up fighting over it!
Would it be prudent to add in some panacur paste just incase E. cuniculi is playing a role too?? Just a thought. (I'd rely much more on Marie's expert advice here than my suggestion but would be interested to hear if it could be a differential?)

Good luck with the case!
The only way I can see that EC would contribute to glaucoma would be if parasitic migration through the lens set up protein leakage and a phacoclastic uveitis with secondary glaucoma if the inflammatory debris blocked the drainage angle. However, this would be chronic and clearly evident prior to the distension.

We have a game at work - find a rabbit symptom and see how you can relate it to an underlying encephalitozoonosis (yes we are that geeky!). Surprisingly most things can be but rarely do we find that it is actually the cause.

HMRC have raided my bank account and cleaned it out so a £2k tonometer is out of the question. There are second hand Perkins type tonometers available of varying vintages for £600-800. Are they any good?

consider glaucoma most likely. If a New Zealand White then there is an
inherited predisposition for congenital malformation of the drainage
angle. However this looks too small for a 16-20wk old NZW so possibly a
cross or just a coincidental coloration and morphology that looks like a
NZW. You really need to get IOP on this, can anyone else locally do
this? If absolutely impossible then assess crudely with digital pressure
and trial canine topical treatments plus analgesia.

In my
experience medical treatment of glaucoma in rabbits fails to acheive
long-term control and results in enucleation eventually.
