Thanks for the reply Tim - I wasn't sure if this was truly a hypospadia because there appears to be a normal penile tip that will protrude through the hole in the prepuce, rather than an opening directly into the urethra. It is a distal defect, and he does seem to be urinating normally (through the abnormal hole I would assume), so I think I'll go with the leave alone approach for now. Really should have got a photo but hopefully my description makes sense!

Hi Chris, it sounds most likely to be a penile hypospadia - this is a failure of fusion of the embryonic urogenital folds leaving a midline defect in the prepuce which is usually confluent with a urethral defect at the same site. Is he urinating out of the "hole" or through the tip of his penis?

The penis is often not normal in these cases with the distal urethra often under-developed and so it can be hazardous to try to close the defect. It would be interesting to try to gently pass a urinary cath and do a contrast rad to see what's attached to what. If the defect is distal (which it sounds like) and the dog is urinating normally, it is often safest to leave them alone.

Unfortunately not, but the camera will be ready next time he comes in! If you can imagine a prepuce with a small hole underneath, you're pretty much there.
