What is maintenance for a rabbit, and what do others use in hospital and under GA? Would you vary this for example in a

Re: IV fluid rates in rabbits

I use 100mls/kg/day as maintenance rate. I usually use hartmans. For dehydrated or shocked patients i'll use twice maintenance or more as I would in a cat or dog. For GA's I usually give 10-20mls for an average sized rabbit as boluses during the procedure and often another 20mls sc. If it is a longer procedure repeated boluses will be given or if i'm expecting it to be a long procedure I might put them on a drip.

Re: IV fluid rates in rabbits

I would work on 75-100ml/kg/day but it is probably safe to give a 100ml/kg bolus I/V over an hour if it is very hypovolaemic. I would tend to use Hartmanns on the basis that most ill rabbits are likley to be acidotic but colloids may be better again if profoundly hypovolaemic.

Re: IV fluid rates in rabbits

I was always taught that basic fluids for rabbits is 100ml/kg/day maintenance rates. Afraid I'm not sure regarding losses/surgical rates.
