A strange yellow thing has appeared in the sky above Ireland. It's radiating light and warmth. We aren't used to such things here, hence are utterly unprepared for the sudden influx of flies and maggoty pets.

Re the clinic - it's spotless and the dogs ( large and hairy x 2) came in with maggots and were hospitalised, they didn't get them here. They were attracting flies though due to their putrid flesh even though they received excellent nursing care, hence the questions. The other pets I was asking about are at home with their owners, also being kept clean but you can't watch them 24/7 and it takes 5 mins for a fly to lay eggs.

I looked into Vectra 3d but it contain permethrins so I would have the same concerns about it in a household with smoochy cats as Advocate.

What's F10 and who makes it?

Re flyscreens and aircon would love both but it's not my clinic unfortunately so although I wanted both, it's not my money to spend.

Anyhow the weather is back to normal ( raining) and the maggoty duo have recovered and gone home and we are now fly free.

I'd still like some F10 info though :)

Re: Flies/maggots/ bleurrgh stuff :(
We have to have all the doors and windows open as no air con and the flies are everywhere. What's the best way of keeping them out/killing them?
We have no air-con but air circulation keeps us comfortable except on the rare very hottest days, in fact people still comment how cool it is when its baking outside (but then they moan its too warm in the winter)! This involves open windows and rooflights creating a Venturi effect but rarely is a fly seen. We pride ourselves on a clean smell free clinic - could that be the difference?

Re: Flies/maggots/ bleurrgh stuff :(

Referral facility to avoid.
I would imagine so as it had been hospitalised for over a week by the point at which the maggots started to appear.

Anecdotally I have heard that capstar (Nitenpyram) kills maggots. i haven't had an opportunity to check this though
Works fab! Crush up one large dog capstar tablet, mix with 20ml of water and apply to the maggot - infested area. This was for application in a rabbit - I guess you would use a lot more for a dog! As a nurse, I used it several times in rabbit cases years ago in practice. I keep Capstar (well, the Johnsons Flea tablets equivalent as cheaper and the same active ingredient) readily available in case I ever get a fly blown sheep.

I have seen quite a few flyblown, non rabbit cases. Including, unfortunately, a long stay canine inpatient being intensively nursed in a referral facility . Most have been wildlife cases though.

This cat was brought in to me by an RSPCA Inspector the other weekend, original injury from a collar wound that flies have got to. There were so many maggots they were surrounded by bubbles, going into both limb muscles and in towards the thorax. The cat was chipped, and had been missing for over a year.

As you can probably tell by the pentoject bottle in the background it was euthanased on welfare grounds after discussion with the owner. I thought that the extent of the damage and how far the maggots were penetrating it would have been a huge job to sort out and unfortunately the owners couldn't afford treatment. Does anyone think otherwise?

With unlimited fund I would probably have removed all the maggots, cleaned the wound further and re-assessed. I think it would have been hard to close that skin defect without extensive skin grafts, and possibly limb amputation to make it easier?

Re: Flies/maggots/ bleurrgh stuff :(
I love F10 also, and you can get the F10 spray with insecticide in :)

I like the F10 with insecticide for rabbits and it could be used on dogs but probably best not use it if there's the possibility of the cats being exposed to it.

He lives in the middle of nowhere but with a footpath next to the house, the terrier was on the footpath off a lead. He has been missing for 2 weeks and staggered in last night.

Presented this morning, severe maggot infestation on hind quarters, very hypothermic, extreme dehydration. He has had fluids, antibiotics, pain relief and extensive clip and clean. The F10 indeed seemed to kill the maggots on the cat. Amazingly he is eating tonight.

I have used rearguard on dogs and cats with no apparent problems, and also on a feathered horse with frog maggots. Hideous things.

Re: Flies/maggots/ bleurrgh stuff :(

Anecdotally I have heard that capstar (Nitenpyram) kills maggots. i haven't had an opportunity to check this though
