Hoping someone can help me out with this case! It's an 11yo MN Japanese Chin that has recently begun having some strange neurological episodes. At first I thought it sounded like the owner was describing seizures but the videos look a bit different

Re: Japanese Chin ataxic episodes

Thank you both for your speedy responses. I will organise to get the dog in for blood glucose tests. Do you think a cardiac cause is a possible differential from the videos? There was nothing abnormal with the heart on auscultation.

Re: Japanese Chin ataxic episodes

Whatever the name given to the events, it seems to affect both muscle strength and mentation. Considering that and the episodic nature (waxing and waning), I would recommend first ruling-out metabolic causes (especially hypogycemia secondary to insulinoma or insulin-like tumour) before investigating the possibility of an intracranial disease with MRI and CSF. Best to starve the dog for at least 12 hours before checking his glucose 3 times at about one hour intervals.

Re: Japanese Chin ataxic episodes

I have a client with a CKCS and he had similar collapsing episodes to this. Pheno helped a lot but he still wasn't right. Went to the Vet School for MRI and diagnosed him with hydrocephalus so he is on drugs to help that as well as his grade 5 heart murmur :( Poor things has nothing for him. Deffo a poss with the Chin breed too?

Re: Japanese Chin ataxic episodes

These are the 4 videos of the case the owner has been able to make. Not sure how to add multiple videos here so hope this works...
