Wanted to find out what are the options / ways of giving Ivermectin orally to a dog. Do people usually get the large animal injectable ivermectin and then use propylene glycol to dilute and formulate the strength and dose needed? Has anyone

Re: Oral ivermectin use in dogs
Can we use ivermectin large animal injection (like Panomec) directly without dilution if volume of the dose is not too small?
Yes. I certainly have.
Has anyone used the topical Pharmaq Ivermectin 1mg/ml in propylene glycol meant for ornamental birds in dogs orally?
Not personally. I have no direct experience / knowledge, but remember reading a paper using selamectin orally and they had squeezed a topical "Stronghold" on to a piece of bread to achieve this. I can't think of any reason myself why the use of a topical ivermectin 1mg/ml in propylene glycol solution would be inappropriate - I've just never done it, but may well be more cost-effective than the other options.

Re: Oral ivermectin use in dogs
Yes. Get owners to sign off-licence consent form after explaining potential risks.

I've not used the topical stuff, not familiar with it.

Exceedingly unimportant I reckon. There are about 13 dog breeds that have been reported to have the MDR1 gene mutation being tested for last time I checked, along with numerous mixed breed dogs. The logical conclusion of this would be that there is no point testing for it in isolated pedigree dogs from breeds not known to have the relevant allele.

I've used both drenches and injectable solutions orally in dogs in the past - I've no strong reason for a preference other than cost (I'd be interested to hear thoughts of others on other factors that have influenced their choice).

Dose: I tend to use 0.6mg/kg orally once daily. As is fashionable, I start at e.g. 0.1mg/kg and increase daily to reach the final daily dose over a week. I don't know how important this really is in dogs that are not likey to have the MDR1 mutant allele. The toxicity I have seen on rare occasions in these dogs is usually chronic after prolonged administration for perhaps 3 months or more, but I guess there is no harm in phasing-in the dose other than confusing the owner a bit.

Re: Oral ivermectin use in dogs

We use Oramec sheep drench, increasing dose over 10 days.

Re: Oral ivermectin use in dogs

I have used oral ivermectin (Panomec 1%) with good effect in about 6 dogs with generalised demodecosis, at a dose of 0.4-0.6mg/kg/day, tapering up slowly to this dose over 10-14days, monitoring for neuro side effects.

WHWT seem to be more sensitive to side effects so it should be used in caution in these. I have never genetically tested, and I wouldn't use oral ivermectin in collies or collie crosses.... hasn't happened yet, but if aludex wasn't working/suitable I guess I would go for oral milbemycin as an alternative?

Hope that helps!
