Am also doing a case study on a koala that was being treated for Chlamydia with daily chloramphenicol but died of bronchopneumonia, suspected due to Pseudomonas from environemntal swabs - does anyone else have experience of Pseudomonas

Re: pseudomonas
Also, while I'm by no means a koala vet, i try to avoid antibiotics that are available OTC (yes, i know that's only eyedrops but it's just setting the stage for widespread resistance!)
+1, I remember the hooha over salmonella in pigs [from memory] and these feckless vets giving out chloramphenicol powder [I think] and causing salmonella resistance so mothers and babies would die 'cos there was nothing to treat salmonella with etc. etc.

And the fine upstanding doctors dishing out chloro eyes drops willy-nilly.....

Thank you for you comments.

Treatment was as per standard protocol, over which I had no control as was doing a placement there and was not in charge. Bit of a cock up with couriers so samples no good for culture sadly, but histo showed gram negative bacteria. Environmental swabs showed Pseudomonas but was done a while after. Yes, it was a Queensland koala so almost certainly had retrovirus.

My main query was that the koala was progressing well clinically with the Chlamydia treatment, then was found acutely dead one morning, which turned out to be from bronchopneumonia, wondering if anyone else has seem similar cases, as it was not the Chlamydia that killed it for a change - elderly female.

Could bone marrow suppression have killed the Koala?

Oxytet great for chlamydia.

Re: pseudomonas

Also, while I'm by no means a koala vet, i try to avoid antibiotics that are available OTC (yes, i know that's only eyedrops but it's just setting the stage for widespread resistance!)

Re: pseudomonas

Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, many strains of Pseudomonas, particularly P. aueruginosa, are not sensitive to chloramphenicol, due to a combination of resistance traits.

Was the Pseudomonas infection ever actually confirmed (via pm with subsequent culture)? It's a bit of a leap to assume responsibility of an environmental contaminant without more convincing evidence. Also, please don't get lulled into a false sense of security of a 'superstrong antibiotic' - there is no such thing.
