Need some technological advice - am doing mini case study on sudden death in an Australian pelican (in Queensland) that had paresis - does anyone have reference ranges and toxic levels for lead, zinc and mercury for these birds or any kind

Re: heavy metals in australian pelicans

Sorry, can't help on ref ranges (maybe try VIN if you have access), but may be able to help on the chemical maths.

My chemistry is a bit rusty, but for this you need to know the molecular weight of the substance (try Google).

PPM = mg/L (for liquids)

mol = g/molecular weight

mg = (mols x molecular weight)/0.001

so, plug in the mols (remembering to convert from micromols or nanomols to mols as appropriate) and molecular weight to get the mg.

Since all the units you are using are per Litre, the answer you get will be the PPM.

my apologies if I have made an error - its been a long time since I last did this.

Re: heavy metals in australian pelicans

I was going to suggest the wildlife information network.
