Oh dear, I have just received this email from a potential client:

My name is katy, I have many pets including 3 cats, a dog, a tortoise, as well as many guinea pigs and 2 skinny pigs.

I am a very active member of the CCT http://www

Re: Oh dear!

But a petition to who, asking for what?

It's difficult to gather evidence for a prosecution. Trading Standards are so p****d off with trying to do Vedra and her chums they decline to touch her any more. RCVS tried hard, to the point where they had the Rodentologists Association (!) demonstrating outside Belgravia House, complaining they were being harassed.

Re: Oh dear!

Did anyone ever start a petition, just had guinea pig dentals using a "burrito" as physical restraint by Vedra pop up on my facebook feed :/

Re: Rodentologist discussion

No reply from RCVS.

Re: Rodentologist discussion

Also, I always record in the notes what I have said, but as we know often their recollection of what was said/done is different. CCTV great idea, esp for the screaming banshees - wish had had that for last years owner of the year award where we called the police as we thought she was going to hit someone after screaming and waving fists inches from our faces when we asked her to pay the bill after we had spent 2 hours after hours stitching up her dog after it ran through a glass door..sigh. She was still screaming the place down in the car park when the police turned up...

Re: Rodentologist discussion

I agree!
Hi all

Apologies this msge is not in the right part of the 'thread' as it has gone nuts since I last looked. Thought people might be mildlly amused by theoutcome of my previous post about the batty woman who demanded ivermectin to treat her rabbits that she had diagnosed via google with hepatic coccidiosis.

As many of you predicted the shit hit the fan. When I rang to tell her that ivermectin does not kill coccidia she demanded to bring it back. When this was refused she decided that she would use it anyway, including on 12 week old rabbits, and asked for the dose. She said that she was writing it down as I spoke - I quoted her the BSAVA rabbit book dose of 0.4 MG/kg but also warned her about off label use, unnecessary use, risky in young etc etc, to which she basically said "yeah yeah I know better".

Then the brown stuff happened - a couple of days later her husband rang to complain to the practice manager that I had told them the wrong dose - claimed I had told them 0.4ML/kg instead of 0.4mg/kg, and that if he had done what I had said they would have killed all of their rabbits. He went on to add that 'luckily' they had rung the opposition clinic, who had quoted them the correct dose, which they think is the vet that their 'breeder who told them that they needed ivermectin for self diagnosed hepatic coccidiosis' had used, and they had told them the 'correct' dose. He also said that due to my apparent stuff up they had no faith in my clinic or my veterinary skills, and would not be coming here - which was ironic as they had not come here anyway, including when I informed them that we needed to examine some animals to get a diagnosis before dishing out random drugs.

So, yes, as you said, these people are BAD for our mental health and reputations, and think nothing of shitting all over us for reasons that are purely their fault, and we definitely don't want to encourage them to become clients if they are not already. Opinions welcome - to the person who previously said 'buy a gun and shoot the owner' - I applaud you but sadly even in new zealand where they shoot nearly everything else, shooting idiots is outlawed.
Sorry I missed the original post on this but my first thought is "why would you talk to this client on the phone?" If the animal needs diagnosing and treating, it needs a consult. Your time is just as valuable whether its in the consult room or on the phone so why not insist that if they want to talk to a vet they make an appointment? That way you get paid for your time, there are clear clinical notes made about doses and discussions, and a proper label with correct dosing is provided. Can save so many headaches. And if they won't pay for a consult, you can really save yourself some headaches.

Re: Rodentologist discussion
We have CCTV in reception
The other thing to do would be to advise the client that you can check the recording of the conversation! Even if you don't have a recording they are unlikely to call your bluff!

I hope you are enjoying your retirement.

I wrote her an email saying that I would be happy to see the guinea pig and I had plenty of experience treating them. I said that I would need to investigate to determine if the guinea pig is actually diabetic or not and that I couldn't prescribe medications based on someone else's diagnosis. She hasn't emailed me back and it's been a couple of weeks so I don't imagine I will get a reply now. She hasn't booked an appointment as far as I know.

James, have you had any reply to your email to the RCVS?

Re: Rodentologist discussion

Hello Catherine. Perhaps my ancient Cert LAS makes me a rodentologist but I hope not! I would see the client if you have a long boring afternoon with no appointments but look at the pig as a vet not a nutter! See if she will let you do a toenail clip to see if it actually has a raised glucose. Try to talk about diet - I doubt whether rolled oats are ideal for a guinea pig with or without a raised blood sugar. If you actually then want to keep her as a client things will progress. If you don't then she will melt away with the suggestion of proper tests and, dare I say it , normal fees. If you want to chase up the rodentologist and or the vet who prescribes by remote control -ask for their names and addresses on normal supercession principles. I bet that she will not give them and will then vanish. Hope the enterprise is going well.
When I was at vet school we did a common first year course with the medics and dentists - who were generally considered the 'thickos' who couldn't get into med or vet school. Even so I don't think they ever admitted a horse into the dental school.

Re: Oh dear!
Many equine dentists have had a lot of training (of variable quality) so definitions can become difficult.
No such thing as an equine dentist. Keep 'em in inverted commas please. And defintions are not at all difficult, whatever the training, when "equine dentists" are extracting horses' cheek teeth and even attempting repulsion. Anyway, messing with the sensitive tissues is veterinary surgery and dentine is a sensitive tissue.

However, I quite agree, keep this to "rodentologists" first.

Re: Oh dear!
I think it would also help to have a subject title for this thread that it is a bit less cryptic than 'Oh Dear'!

It should and it must! Rodentologists are a relatively easy target because they are unqualified in all senses of the word. Many equine dentists have had a lot of training (of variable quality) so definitions can become difficult.

A nutty (if well meaning?) rodentologist with a half day training is exactly the type of group the RCVS should be gunning for. It is a start! Equine dentists next target?
