Over the past months he's had several abscesses that needed draining/removing. He usually runs a low grade fever (T39.6) and be is a bit off colour during the episodes

Re: poodle with recurrent abscesses

I have seen previously cases like this that have panniculitis associated with pancreatitis.

Re: poodle with recurrent abscesses

See below for histopathology report:

I saw him back today and he had 2 new abscesses.

Blood tests done today: all normal.

Will go for steroids and add ab to treat infections above just in case.

Histology

DESCRIPTION: Biopsy from abscess on left thoracic wall x 1. The tissue examined comprises skin with a deep dermal to hypodermal mass composed of a cavity containing loose neutrophils and macrophages. The cavity is surrounded by granulation tissue and fibrotic tissue which is densely infiltrated by lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages and further neutrophils. Affected tissue extends to the margins of the sample examined.

DIAGNOSIS: Pyogranulomatous inflammation.

PROGNSIS: See below.

COMMENT: The appearance is consistent with an area of pyogranulomatous inflammation. The underlying cause is not apparent in the sections examined although could include a ruptured follicle perhaps secondary to a local pyoderma, ruptured follicular cyst or foreign body penetration combined with bacterial infection. Full excision should be curative, although culture and sensitivity of any residual affected fresh tissue may be advisable.

Re: poodle with recurrent abscesses

sounds like a pyrogranulomatous syndrome , maybe worth looking at Calcium , the other odd presentations that spring to mind are mycosis fungoides chronic cutaneous lymphoma / NME / infected calcinosis cutis cysts, HAC.

Re: poodle with recurrent abscesses

Thanks, all for your comments. I am still waiting for the histology report. I'll let you know when I get it.

no foreign bodies, no history of bite wounds. First couple I don't know where they were, because I was not seeing the dog at the time. last couple were one on back leg near popliteus, one over hipbone asnd last on thoracic wall.
