Saw a 10year old labrador retriever which has occassional fits and is on libromide only after a previously diagnosed liver problem. The fits are now once every 4-6months. was on phenobarb but was stopped after they had found the liver problem

Re: Liver case - advice appreciated.

Hi, just a quick update.

The Bile Acid Stim test was normal. So we are stopping all liver treatment and going to re blood sample in 2-3 months to check the liver parameters are not rising!

Thanks all.

Do you think the dog ever had liver disease? The liver enzymes could have just been induced by the phenobarbitone

This seems very possible to me as well.

Re: Liver case - advice appreciated.

Thanks, Will let you know.

Will offer a bile acid stim test with a view to stopping the hepatosyl if all is normal.

Don't know if ever had liver disease the history is difficult to interpret as it is mainly the test results and a summary of the referral report. Doesn't say if the dog was ever actually ill. Will question the owner when I speak to her!

Re: Liver case - advice appreciated.

Hi Claire,

I think if all the tests are normal then you are quite justified in stopping the therapy, but if anything is still abnormal then you should probably continue. It could be that the liver enzymes have normalised because of loss of liver, but that seems unlikely in a well dog.

Do you think the dog ever had liver disease? The liver enzymes could have just been induced by the phenobarbitone, and the glycogen accumulation is fairly non-specific.....

Do let us know how you get on.
