Looking for a bit of advice please! I have a JRT that has had biopsies that show LP gastritis and enteritis (mild in stomach, mod in intestines) that has responded fairly well to pred in the past, but the owner feels the steriods cause the

Re: methylpred vs pred for LP gastritis/enteritis

Sorry- lymphocytic plasmacytic (LP) gastritis and enteritis.

The problem with budesonide in dogs is that it isn't as effective and still leads to suppression of the HPA axis and so there is minimal benefit to big cost of using it.

You could certainly try methylpred, prednisolone is what has traditionally been used in trials but you could give it a go and see. I suspect you may find a similar problem.

Otherwise I would probably try cyclosporine, should be fairly reasonable cost for a small dog. Response rate is slightly lower but would be worth a trial. Another option would be chlorambucil.

But I would second diet as well if you haven't already tried?

Many cases will respond favourably and can sometimes manage with diet alone. Budesonide can be used as it's metabolised by the liver, so minimal systemic side effects.
