I have a 5yo Mn cross breed that looks like a Labrador puppy with a puppy like coat. He is on his second owner. With his first owner at a different vets in August 2013 was investigated for alopecia of few weeks duration and PU/PD since a

Re: Cushings?Diabetes Insipidus??

Thanks for the reply Andy. The dog does seem small in stature but given that we don't know what his parents were I guess it's quite subjective. He is castrated and as far as I know they descended normally and his teeth look normal. Bloods included calcium which was normal and he has not shown any clinical signs eg. GI dz or neurological signs so had not put PSS high on my differential list but it is something to consider.

I will talk to the owner about doing some extra blood test but it has been hard to get her to do the ones thus far!

Re: Cushings?Diabetes Insipidus??

Hi Kara,

interesting case - is the dog small in stature? And has it had normal dental eruption? And are its testicles normally descended.

sorry for all the questions! It's likely with such dilute urine that the dog either has diabetes insipidus or another disease causing a secondary nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Did your bloods include calcium? And have you considered a portosystemic shunt?

I would probably do a bile acid stim, make sure you have checked calcium, culture the urine and if possible look at measuring T4/TSH (congenital hypothyroidism?). You could also measure IGF-1, especially if retention of juvenile characteristics.

after that you are left thinking about water deprivation tests really.

do keep us updated!
