He had a number of teeth removed last year due to periodontal disease and we thought this had sorted out his dribbling. However in November he started dribbling again all remaining teeth looked fine

Re: Odd gingivitis in a dog

OK I confess to not being totally accurate with terminology re the areas involved. Some buccal mucosa was inflamed but also areas above the teeth but not right at the margin. It was in the other day and I tried to take a photo but it is not looking too bad at the moment and it did not come out on the photo. CUPS sounds like an option. I am going away to look it up and see if I can find any photos for comparison!

Although he is a friendly dog he does tend to clamp his mouth shut when trying to examine it. As the mouth has been sore brushing has not really been an option. However the owner is persisting with the chlorhexidine rinse and it does seem to be helping.

Thanks for the comments.

Re: Odd gingivitis in a dog
If it is CUPS and the owner can't brush then Im afraid it's extractions
I often wondered whether some of these problems were poor salivary output ? Dachshunds and chinese crested present with a lot of KCC and they also seem to have a lot of dental problems post PDT . Possibly a lot of dental problems anyway ?

Re: Odd gingivitis in a dog

I never fully understood the difference until this BSAVA - thanks to Soukup, Snyder and R. Perry's lecture today. Another thing I'd like to put in the - lack of teaching of vet dentistry at Universities basket, but I guess I have to shoulder some responsibility for not learning this with extra curricular reading. It would be hard to cover every topic. I expect there's a lot of confusion over terms describing gingiva/mucosa/gingivitis/stomatitis/periodontitis etc etc. Well I hope so, as if not, it was just me...!

Re: Odd gingivitis in a dog

The OP said
has a lot of gingivitis not associated with tooth margins
, not that the buccal mucosa was inflamed. Just saying.

Pictures would be helpful. If the inflamed/ulcerated mucosa is tissue overlying teeth then I would probably not rush to take biopsies, if this isn't the case I would. If it is CUPS control is totally dependent on plaque control. Antibiotics are not the answer (plaque is a biofilm) and steroids are contraindicated.

If it is CUPS and the owner can't brush then Im afraid it's extractions.

Dachsunds are one of the breeds that are prone to it. When you lift the lip, are the nasty bits on the inside of the lips on the bits where the lip touches the teeth? Pics would be good.
