No idea what happens when you stop antibiotics though as presumably the infection will just re-establish itself again if it is a genetic problem.

Re: Histiocytic Colitis
Recently diagnosed an 8month old dog with histiocytic colitis via biopsies.
In theory at least, you could do mucosal culture and sensitivity testing (prefarably with MICs) to see what antbiotics might be appropriate?

Otherwise santibiotic choice seems to be based on empicical E.coli sensitivity, macrophage penetration and previous antibiotic usage for the patient.

Chloramphenicol might be an appropiate alternative from the point of view of trying to avoid encouraging FQ resistance, but not really any better from a safety profile which I think is what you are more interested in...

Other drugs that could achieve the aims (in theory) are rifampicin, clarithromycin, azithromycin and florfenicol (probably not any more responsible than a FQ), TMPS and tetracyclines (may be resistance issues already in play).

Re: Histiocytic Colitis
Histopath results vary according to pathologist
Was he saying that he didn't consider histiocytic ulcerative colitis (HUC) in a young boxer as a distinct disease entity?
1. Start all chronic enteritis with fenbedazole 50mg/kg for minimum 5 d regardless of giardia results.

2. dietary trial

3. antibiotic trial - Apparently the Americans prefer to start with tylosin 10 - 15mg/kg tid but oxytet at 20mg/kg tid or metronidazole 10mg/kg bid also used.

4. Anti-inflamm/ immunosuppressive - pred/ sulphasalazine etc
Was this the same approach for HUC?

Genuinely interested as I think that might be the same Simpson who was part of the start of this craze for treating HUC with FQ's?

I understand the original post refers to a reported improvement with FQ use in these cases (e.g. http://www.degruyter.com/view/j/pjvs.2013.16.issue-1/pjvs-2013-0028/pjvs-2013-0028.xml)

I don't know enough about these things to know if this is sensible or not, but I would feel vindicated to give an 8 weeks course of enrofloxacin in a young boxer with HUC that was not responding to dietary mangament and fenbendazole etc. At least until presented with a reasoned alteranative.

I wouldn't be worried about FQ side effects on cartilage in such a dog personally.

Re: Histiocytic Colitis

boxer by any chance?

At CPD East of England December 13 Kenny Simpson discussed IBD some length - take home message was:

Histopath results vary according to pathologist

hypo-proteinaemia more important as px than type

1. Start all chronic enteritis with fenbedazole 50mg/kg for minimum 5 d regardless of giardia results.

2. dietary trial
