This cat presented as query vomiting blood. When we knocked it out we found this emerging from the tonsillar crypt and hanging down the back of the throat. We discovered it would flip forwards like this.
We removed it and sent it for histology

Re: What do you think this is?

[quote user="Martin Atkinson"]

We found an 'alien' in a rapidly growing mass inside a bitch's leg. It was actually moving around and we expected it to burst out at any minute and grab someone by the throat. Of course the clue is in the word bitch - it was a near full term pup in a herniated uterine horn. We removed a live and healthy pup by caesarian via the leg then got the others out by the more traditional route!! Anyone else seen one of those?

Not quite pregnant, but I did have a mini dachs that had an inguinal mass that got bigger twice a year. Turned out to be a uterine horn, which was why it was so difficult to find the uterus when I spayed her!

Re: What do you think this is?

Scary, I'd not heard this. Typically pedunculated and relatively easy to remove. The histopathologists seem to struggle to know exactly what they are. The path report and the clinical presentation apparently at odds with one another. If I recall correctly, excision has proved curative in all cases.

Re: What do you think this is?

[quote user="Charlotte Marshall"]

Well it definitely originated from the tonsil. As it came from the tonsil I was thinking neoplasia. We sent it off and this was the report we got:

"Diagnosis: Suppurative stomatitis

Description: one section of the submitted tissue is examined. The tissue is markedly oedematous with areas of necrosis and fibrin exudation. The tissue also contains extensive infiltrates of neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes and plasma cells

Comment: This is an inflammatory lesion. It is most likely to be a consequence of trauma or possible bacterial infection. There is no evidence of neoplasia"

As we were surprised by this we got them to do some more slides from it. They got a couple of people to look at it and still said the majority of tissue was inflammatory and necrotic. One of the slides did have tissue consistent with tonsil. One person thought there was one area with less well organised blood vessels which could possibly be neoplastic but the other two disagreed.

So we wait and see I suppose but that was certainly not the histology result I expected!
