I'm currently treating some juvenile capybara with very severe acariasis - suspected secondary to immunosuppression associated with significant husbandry deficits. All are very thin despite eating well and the weakest died 1wk after the first

Re: Ivermectin hepatotoxicity?

[quote user="Marie Kubiak"]

Thanks Mark, I was expecting evidence of food deprivation but the pathologist didn't seem to think this was the cause. Would have been simpler that way!

Interestingly there was a post on here not long ago about 2 different pathologist giving 2 wholly different interpretations of the sample; can you ask a second opinion from the company, explaining the background of the case?

Re: Ivermectin hepatotoxicity?

Thanks Mark, I was expecting evidence of food deprivation but the pathologist didn't seem to think this was the cause.
Mariette, I certainly can't rule out liver issues as the initial factor, leading to mite infestation possibly compromised further by husbandry. It's incredibly frustrating not knowing what caused the start of problems and more specifically the liver damage. I am assuming the others (and the adults) have been exposed to the hypothetical toxin too and am worried we're just waiting for these animals to decline and withholding treatment (albeit for mites, liver disease or euthanasia) means they are suffering.

I'm glad I haven't had a dozen replies telling me that ivermectin is clearly the cause, and feel less responsible for the situation but still can't help but feel bad about the animals.

Lowered general resistance etc? The cirrhosis was obviously present before you treated it.

While that's a case from a human suffering from anorexia, what about starvation-induced liver damage? (You mentioned the acariasis was secondary to poor husbandry.)

Re: Ivermectin hepatotoxicity?

I love it when owners decide they know better than specialists...good luck with them!
