I've just diagnosed one on a biopsy but haven't heard of the condition before. The only references I can find are from 10 years ago when it was a new disease. How common is it now in the UK? Can it appear in >1 pup

Re: Hereditary nasal parakeratosis of labradors

I think in the USA there is a product called kerasolve gel which ideal for treating this. When I last looked into it, the best match I could get in UK was calmurid cream combined 50:50 with aqueous cream. I have seen good results using this on ear margins too.

Re: Hereditary nasal parakeratosis of labradors

Thanks for the replies

Mine was a chocolate lab of "extremely good pedigree" also

Re: Hereditary nasal parakeratosis of labradors

I've seen a couple of young chocolate labs with this. I also recommend sunscreen as there are sometimes some kind of depigmentation when the scales fall off, which probably also serves to confuse matters with DLE. Vaseline works well to control if the owners are compliant. Will now try propylene glycol mix as well. Many cases the owners seem to worry more than the dogs (if there's no secondary infections etc).

Re: Hereditary nasal parakeratosis of labradors
Can we ever expect it to fully resolve or do we manage the condition with vaseline?
I alternated this with a solution of 1:1 propylene glycol/water on alternate days for and worked for that dog.

Only case I saw. Chocolate lab originating from Glasgow as I remmeber it about 5 years ago?

Original diagnosis had been DLE and had been getting immunosuppressive doses of steroids, so was quite a secondary infection to clear up as well...
