I have only heard of a couple of cases of hydroallantois in dogs written up (YT and a Pug). I expect that you've come across the case reports if you've been googling but in case you haven't the Pug case is open -access and is on:

I've never seen one and so not much to add as it sounds a bit like a "lightning strike" case..

Unfortunately all the puppies were dead and their fur was more coarse and spiky than the wet slimey puppys you get from a normal caesar. Not sure if the pups died due to what was going on in the uterus or whether it was due to the ineptitude of the owner for not bringing the bitch in to us sooner. The bitch was ok post surgery, but was in pretty poor body condition generally from what I remember.

Re: ?hydrallantois in a bitch

I had a bitch years ago with something similar. Loads of fluid I can't remember what the uterus looked like. However I do remember the bitch going as white as a sheet once the fluid gushed out. We put her on fluids and she did make it but it was a bit touch and go.

Re: ?hydrallantois in a bitch

I had one in a chihuahua a few weeks ago, three pups but a huge amount of fluid sitting in the uterus. Wasn't anywhere near full term - owner was spaying as bitch had been caught by a larger dog - and surgery went ok.

If you have done well over a hundred without problems I wouldn't think it's anything you have done that is at fault!

Re: ?hydrallantois in a bitch

I have only seen hydro-allantois in cows. We needed to dig a drainage ditch to get rid of the fluid! The cow seemed to do reasonably OK overnight and stood up ( she was so heavy before the caesar thatshe couldn't stand anymore), but then died the next day. Reading up on it the litterature said that cows very often die, whatever you do. What I don't quite understand is the effect it seems to have on the circulation, because obviously the fluid in the uterus is not part of the circulatory system, so whether it is because of longstanding pressure on part of the vascular system which is then relieved suddenly?

Just so you don't blame yourself about the dog arresting.
