This is a question about my own pup, a six month old old working cocker. She has an extra right upper incisor palatal to the proper ones, with the middle of it level with the tiny gap between 2nd and 3rd incisor . I'm pretty certain it's not

Re: supernumerary incisor

Thanks Peter.

The little cobbler's child has been neglected as regards dental care so will have to brush up on that (see what I did there). I am always lecturing puppy owners on the importance of close handling every day so will hang my head in shame and get the beastie used to it.

Re: supernumerary incisor
Hi Evelyn

Being new at this game and seeing you are a seasoned blogger a quick question - How do you quote a bit of my post in yours?

The fact that you have a dog in the same house doesn't mean it's easy to monitor the periodontal health of a tooth! Ginny suggested that getting a photo was difficult, so assessing periodontal health may/may not be tricky. Evaluating the periodontal health of a tooth involves more than having a quick look - you need to be able see if there is attachment loss which isn't easy.
When you reply, you "select" the bit you want to quote then hit "Quote this Post".

Anyway. Sorry, just my trivial late night facetious comment, thinking of the cobbler's child and all that.

PS I am not a blogger!

Re: supernumerary incisor

Hi Pete

When you're replying to a forum post, you'll see a red button which says 'Quote This Post' above the area where you are typing your reply.

If you hit this button without doing anything else, it will quote all of the post.

If you just want to select a bit of the post to quote (to identify which point you are replying to), then first place your cursor in your reply where you want the quote to appear. Then, with your mouse, select just the text from the post above that you want to quote. Then press Quote This Post and it will just quote the bit you've highlighted.

For the really advanced option, you can press Quote / Review Entire Thread (the black button), which allows you to quote from anywhere in the thread.

All the best

The easiest answer to your question would be to refer your pup to have the offending tooth extracted as supernumerary teeth are bad news. However that's not always the case.

The problems that supernumerary teeth can cause include impaction of other adult teeth, overcrowding which predisposes to periodontal disease, root resorption of adjacent teeth, malocclusion and root dilaceration in adjacent teeth. In your pup it appears that all of the other incisors have erupted normally, that the teeth are not overcrowded and that there is no evidence of malocclusion. Extraction of the supernumerary incisor may be difficult because of the proximity of its root to neighbouring tooth roots.

In human dentistry it is not uncommon for supernumerary teeth that are not causing problems to be monitored rather than extracted. However monitoring would include periodic dental radiography. If it's possible to monitor the periodontal health of the supernumerary incisor and the adjacent teeth it would be acceptable to leave this tooth where it is though it would be important to take intraoral radiographs of this area in the near future to check for evidence of significant pathology. If it is difficult to monitor the periodontal health of this and other teeth it would be best to extract the supernumerary tooth.

Kind regards

Peter
