He was diagnosed with a malignant nasal tumour on CT at the age of 16 1/2. Tranexamic acid helped to control his nosebleeds which were profuse at times (blood running from his nose for 5-10mins, rather than just dripping!) Whenever he had a severe bleed, I increased his dose to 25-30mg/kg bid (500mg tablet/collie), it seemed to take about 24hrs to take effect - he'd have 3-4 bad bleeds in 24hrs and then none a few months. Maintained him at half dose, without any noticeable side effects.

I am sure it improved his quality of life considerably, he was remarkably fit and healthy in every other way, but moderately anaemic after an episode of epistaxis. Funnily enough he loved his agility despite his tumour, and still got some clear rounds (only in anysize competitions) just a few weeks before he was put to sleep, so maybe I should have disclosed that his performance was obviously improved by a banned substance

Re: Tranexamic acid in vet medicine

That's interesting, thanks.

Re: Tranexamic acid in vet medicine

[quote user="emma_j"]
