My mistake - I misheard the employee at Summit on the telephone - it's FIFTEEN pounds plus VAT, not fifty, for a months worth of transdermal methimazole - much better value!!!

If you have access to JVIM (Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine), there is a study that can be helpful to you:

Hill, K. E. et al (2011) The Efficacy and Safety of a Novel LIpophilic Formulation of Methimazole for the Once Daily Transdermal Treatment of Cats with Hyperthyroidism. J Vet Intern Med; 25:1357-65.

The results from this study show that the transdermal preparation may be as useful as Carbimazole (vidalta) BID.The study was funded by a grant from a lab company but I still find the study reliable enough. I haven't used the product yet tho.

Summit (who commercialise it in the UK )was very helpful when I asked them about the product some months ago.

Set up an account with them and they are very quick and efficient.

Ok, so contacted Summit.

Fifty Fifteen pounds plus VAT for 3 x 1ml syringes, 50mg/ml, so each syringe would be 10days supply for a cat on 2,5mg BID.

So not too unreasonable?

I asked about any special documentation, and the person at Summit didn't think I would need anything - should there be any paperwork to fill out???

I had considered the y/d diet from hills as I have a few other patients on it, however the owner has multiple cats, so she would need to put them all on it. Which according to Hills is ok provided certain conditions are met... However expensive in the long run!

Will look into those pill pockets! Might just order some and start seeing if they work on patients...

Will update thread as soon as I contact about a price on the transdermal. According to VIN, main problem is that the product is only stable for 2 weeks??? And longer to get to stable levels of T4, but less GI side effects...

There is a product available called Pill Pockets (made by a company called Greenies) which a couple of our clients with very hard to tablet cats found useful. Sourced on Amazon (they are an American product) - one client said her cat liked them so much he was trying to break into the cupboard to get to them! Could be worth a try?

You could also try that y/d low iodine food from hills. (I don't know price, but specially formulating methimazole probably isn't cheap either!)

we use it occasionally, we source it from a company called 'Summit Veterinary Pharmaceuticals LTD' which also supplies small dose tramadol tablets and the like.

we use it occasionally and it seems to work nicely, I havent prescribed it so cant comment on doses etc but some of my colleagues have used it and are pleased with the results.
