Patient is a 4yo FN Boxer. Initially presented Jun '12, acutely 10/10 lame RF, 5th digit. Xrays revealed chip fracture P1, displaced fragments & dorsal swelling

Re: Digit amputation?

I'd chop off and send off - it is a boxer after-all.
Hang on and you might get some clever alternatives suggested though.

I think problem with avulsion fracture is the ongoing instability of jt due to ligament damage and i do guess that distal pathology is due to this and time.

guessing that other limb pathology has little to do with it, more just repeatedly stumping the toe.

i'm sure arthrodesis is possible, but i wouldn't contemplate it personally.

digital neurectomy might be an alternative salvage strategy prior to considering amputation , but i'd expect to do great with outside toe amputated so why consider other options?
