I have a 'coughing goat' to see tomorrow. I've not spoken to the owners/farmer myself-have just been given a message to let me know-so I have no further information I'm afraid!
Hopefully it will be straightforward but

Re: Coughing goat

Have you done a faecal worm egg count? Might be worthwhile.

Re: Coughing goat

Prob something in past environment fortunately now absent

Nothing abnormal noted on clinical exam. The goat had very recently been acquired and the (reportedly very intermittent) cough settled over a few days with no further problems.

Re: Coughing goat

So what was the outcome?

From my notes, some advice from David Harwood and John Matthews: (and even they admit there is very little information available on the causes of respiratory disease in goats!)

-Manheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida are undoubtedly the major pathogens in UK. Often a problem with goats returning from shows during the summer 'Post show flu' (or any other trigger factors to do with stocking density and ventilation etc).

- May be related to use of multivalent Pasteurella vaccines - avoid combined Pasteurella/Clostridial vaccines - use each vaccine separately.

- Worth bearing in mind TB?!

As you say, the cause may not be infectious though. You might get some other clue on the clinical exam for the individual, the rest of the herd (if applicable) and history?

If the goat is quite bright in itself , then the condition might resolve with symptomatic treatment (antibiotics, anti inflammatories etc). Worth warning the owner these are not licensed specifically for goats in the UK.
