I have a 6y.o. FE mini wire dachshund with Lafora's that is currently on 45mg phenobarb BID. However it isn't really controlling the myoclonic attacks very well, and being on such

Re: Switching anti-seizure medications

As far as i can remember it was a screenshot taken during the pexion webinar which was Boehringer sponsored.

Re: Switching anti-seizure medications

I just phoned the Boehringer technical advise service to get the chart/instructions on how to change over. Keppra worked brilliantly for us! She was on valproic acid for ages and the seizures actually got a bit worse (then they added lamictal, lamotrigine, into the mix and we spent a few weeks in hospital with a serious adverse drug reaction ) Anyway, she was then switched to Keppra and improved almost over night! Not much specific help but Keppra definitely improved myoclonic seizures in our case - my daughter has now been off meds for a year and seizure-free for 3yrs, touch wood, it stays that way!

Re: Switching anti-seizure medications
Boehringer's new drug Pexion?
It works on GABA receptors, just like phenobarbitone, so I'm not sure it will help with the myoclonic jerking, which is the main problem currently (had no seizures for quite a while).

Takes 24-48h to reach steady serum state. Normally half the pheno dose whilst changing over over 48h. Quite wide range, normally start higher and more frequent initially. Cheap these days as generic - 500mg is around 9p per cap online. Personally hate bromide, large club for a focal problem with side effects lasting for ages.

Re: Switching anti-seizure medications

It may be an idea, but she gets regular pancreatitis flare-ups and has quite sensitive guts.
You can buy 500g pots of potassium bromide from the wholesaler and weigh out as much or as little as you need. Fine under the cascade as licensed meds not suitable size. Really cheap too ~£10.
