I've seen a bullock with papillomatosis recently, who should be ready f slaughter in about 6 weeks. He has one big, very ragged, papilloma of approx. double fist size on his kneefold, surrounded by numerous cherry to golfball sized ones. I wouldn't be inclined to do much other than wait and see, and hope it resolves itself in time.

You could always consider a bit of homeopathy.....I've seen warts and ringworm both resolve in calves at variable times after homeopathic treatment.

Re: bovine papillomatosis- problem at the abattoir?

Yes, that didn't stop me from bricking it though. At the end of the day I got a rather random call from trading standards asking me is I'd examined the animal (yes) and if I'd thought it was fit to travel (again, yes). And that was that.
But I had visions of the DC haunting my dreams for a while afterwards. I think the OVS was concerned that the mass could have been damaged during transport, hence causing unnecessary suffering. I'm not sure if he mentioned if it actually was damaged when he phoned the practice to give me a ticking off and to tell me he'd reported me - memory fails me as it was about 10 years ago. Anyway, I was ultra conservative about judging animals fit to travel after that.

Re: bovine papillomatosis- problem at the abattoir?

[quote user="Linda Filshie"]Just a note of caution, I got reported once (by the OVS) for allowing a bullock with a large, non painful mass to travel to slaughter...

If its not painful there should be no issue

So long as not got systemic and put up multiple lymph nodes. Assume no pyrexia etc.

It wasn't open when I saw it, just smelly due to secondary infection in all the nooks and crannies. I adv farmer to keep it clean with salty water and spray it, hopefully it will dry up. Can some local superficial skin infection lead to rejection of an animal?

Re: bovine papillomatosis- problem at the abattoir?

Havnt done OVS work for a couple of years and let my courses lapse but.

If it isnt infected or open you should be OK, the worst you will get is partial carcass rejection imo.

If its open and infected, that might be more of an issue.
