Saw a Westie today that got treated a couple of weeks ago for bite injuries from another dog. Got amox-clav and clindamycin +NSAIDs but re-presented a few days later with swelling on the side of its face below its ear. Quickly blew up bigger

Re: Pseudomonas cellulitis

thanks for replies.

Originally was sensitive to enrofloxacin but didn't improve much on baytril, reswabbed 10 days later and had developed resistance, which the lab told us might happen. Think IV gentamicin would have been the next step but Os had run out of money and, in truth, we would probably have had to debride the thing and manage it as an open wound for months so a relief for all concerned when Os decided euth was the way to go. We had sent core biopsy and deep culture to lab but cancelled when Os decided to euth.

Re: Pseudomonas cellulitis

Did you get sensitivity on your culture?

Re: Pseudomonas cellulitis

May be worth hospitalising with IV gentamycin (if kidneys OK and can be monitored) to see if that may help, +/- other AB's as indicated by sensitivity profile.

I always GA and explore dog bite wounds to avoid this situation (I know it doesn't help this case, but I feel it is an important principle) as early debridement of devitalised tissue and establishing drainage does a lot to prevent such issues.

Re: Pseudomonas cellulitis

Damaged parotid duct?

You could throw some steroids into the mix so long as on suitable abs as they are a much better anti-inflammatory.
