Has been seen regularly by a certificate holder for dentistry to have it's malocclused molars levelled. Over the past months, the dentist has warned the owners that their rabbit 's

Re: Rabbit GI stasis - anything new?

We give a dose of oral ranitidine pre op for all rabbit GAs, however would agree post op pain relief is more important.

Re: Rabbit GI stasis - anything new?

[quote user="Sarah Keir"]What about post anaesthetic?
Not routinely: make sure they're comfortable, syringe when round enough and monitor closely, if not passing droppings then will use prokinetic

Re: Rabbit GI stasis - anything new?

I use cisapride syrup from Summit. I like it and think it seems to work well. The only problem with it is that the shelf life tends to be quite short, sometimes we use the bottle before the use by date but most of the time we have to throw some of it out. before we had cisapride I used ranitidine, I think we have better results with cisparide but I could be imagining it.

I don't give it routinely after ga, I get my nurses to syringe feed as soon as possible after recovery and monitor faeces and appetite. If not eating and defaecating within a few hours of surgery I will give a dose of cisapride.

Re: Rabbit GI stasis - anything new?

I see that cisapride is available as an oral syrup form Summit now. Does any one have any experience of using this? Is it any better than metoclopramide or ranitidine? I would hazard a guess that potentially it may be better as stimulates large bowel not stomach/small intestines.

What about post anaesthetic? Does anyone routine give a pro-kinetic and if so, which one? We currently give metoclopramide routinely to all rabbits that have been anaesthetised but not sure on the evidence for this.

Cheers,

Afraid I don't have dental x-rays, but the Cert Vet Dent does.
FYI - apparently the Lactulose got things moving and bunny has started defaecating. Bloods in march, I think, were normal.
Probably good idea to do them again.

Re: Rabbit GI stasis - anything new?

Cisapride is a good pro-kinetic but I would be looking at x-rays at this stage if possible.
