I just wondered if anyone can offer some advice. I have an owner who has some racing pigeons, a couple of whom have died with few preceding clinical signs (that the owner noticed anyway). One was submitted for post mortem, and the lab was

Re: Pigeons and chlamydia

We buy ornicure regularly from Centaur - no recent issues.

Re: Pigeons and chlamydia

I had a possible case a few weeks ago and when I contacted NVS they said that ornicure was not available and there was no information as to whether it would become available again.

Re: Pigeons and chlamydia

I've been here 2yrs and have ordered it in several times without any problems, bar a 4 month period last year when suppliers ran out. Is it only an NVS issue as it's still sold online as Ornicure in pet pharmacies? I'm off work at the moment but can check where exactly it comes from when I get back.

Not sure what we'd do if that got taken away as Vibravenos is such a pain to order and compounded doxy syrups are hideous tasting.

Re: Pigeons and chlamydia

Hi Marie,

Where are you getting your ornicure from. My memory is that NVS discontinued ornicure 2 years ago. I presume you must have lots of old stock?

Re: Pigeons and chlamydia

Hi,

if PCR and histo are inconclusive then might be a good idea to look at other possible causes too as usually both are reasonable screens. Serology is also a possibility if you can screen live birds for exposure to support a diagnosis of Chlamydia.

Is it breeding/racing/juveniles that are being lost? Any gross changes on pm?

Ornicure is a soluble form of doxycycline hyclate available in the uk, we order through our normal wholesaler but it does occasionally become unavailable. It will work out very expensive to treat a large loft for the full 6wks so may be a good investment for the owner to look at other possible factors/pathogens.
