We have just bought a v-gel and were pondering on the need to autoclave it. No practice (that I've worked at) autoclaves endotracheal tubes, yet the instructions for the v-gel are to autoclave it. Endotracheal tubes are inserted

Re: rabbit supraglottic airway device

[quote user="James Laidlaw"]

Do they then last longer if autoclaved less? Or is that off the record too?

My understanding, and I wouldn't want this to be taking as definitely right, is that they can be autoclaved 40 times, and it's the effect of autoclaving that makes the silicon less flexible and eventually stops them being usable, so it's number of times they're autoclaved not the number of times they're used that's important.

Re: rabbit supraglottic airway device

[quote user="Thomas Johnson"]

We've got the cat and rabbit v-gel tubes, I'm using the cat ones most days and I used the rabbit one for the first time last week, and was very pleased I did as the rabbit decided to stop breathing for a while and IPPV was very straightforward.

We were advised, off the record, by the rep that there was probably no need to autoclave after every use as long as we cleaned them well, as we would with ET tubes. Our plan is to autoclave them after every 4 or 5 uses.
