I did the post mortem on one myself, the other was done at a local lab. The first rat presented out of hours to another vets with a vaginal prolapse. This was repaired UGA. Any ideas on how to treat/prevent ileus in rats? Also any rat medicine/surgery/nutrition textbooks recommended?

Thanks,

I masked her with iso, passed a stomach tube and got thick digested food out. Unfortunately she aspirated some stomach contents and died a few hours later. I had operated on her a few weeks ago for mammary tumours. The only post op complication was a seroma near her vulva that was resolving. I've sent her to a private lab for post mortem, also sent a sample of her food.

Histopathology : Lung - Moderate multifocal increase in BALT ( mainly lymphocytes, smaller numbers of macrophages and palsma cells and occasional mast cell.) There are also similar cell populations scattered throughout the pulmonary parenchyma and some perivascular lymphocytic cuffing. Mild congestion was also present.

Liver: Mild, multifocal hepatocytic fatty vacuolation. In some cases, a large single vacuole is present; in other cases there are several vacuoles within a single hepatocyte and there are foci with both large and small vacuolation present.

Kidney: Mild to moderate congestion mainly at cortico-medullary junction."

Unfortunately I don't have stomach content culture or any histo on the stomach.

Any ideas?

Re: Rat distended stomach

My only thought was pain- both conditions would be sore so perhaps distension of the stomach if open mouth breathing? My only other thought was post mortem distension from rapid gas production? That said they may be people on here with better ideas?
