Ivy poisoning?

We have 8 acres of New Forest land and a couple of beef suckler cows managed to get through the fence last week. One went down with 'grass staggers' yesterday (my provisional diagnosis based on symptoms) but the owners are adamant it has ivy poisoning

Re: Hypomagnesaemia?
Is the affected cow better or dead? Usually it is improved fertilised pasture that gets the mag tied up.

You can sample vitreous humour to measure mag level post mortem. Very cheap and easy. Levels stable for at least 48 hours.

Never seen or even heard of ivy poisoning.

[/quote]

Nor had I and forest cattle eat every kind of cr*p known to man. I recommended they treated (or had it treated!) with magnesium s/c or slow i/v Ca/Mg. They knew better!

My land is far from improved but has been rested over winter. My suspicion is based more on the knowledge of the individuals concerned!

The cow was bodily lifted into the back of a trailer and taken away so I have no idea what has happened other than doubt she received veterinary attention. I suspect the kennelman at the local hunt will confirm ivy poisoning!

Re: Hypomagnesaemia?
Surely it is the cattle owner's responsibility to keep his animals confined, not yours to keep them out of your property.

Also not done LA work for many years so no help whatsoever on clinical aspects!
