Evelyn- it is a one hour open surgery for urgent cases only. There is a substantial premium to attend at that time which puts off any but the most genuine cases. We will not do boosters etc, obviously.

It has to be an open surgery as it is there for urgent cases that occur on a weekend when we're shut......they couldn't make an appointment if they wanted to!

I'm in tomorrow between 10:30 and 11:30am if they want. They can phone or just turn up with the tortoise as it is an open surgery on a sunday (obviously I would prefer them before 11am!). Alternatively one day next week.

Always happy to give phone advice to vets - no problems at all with that - but we are obviously limited by how much phone advice we can offer to owners regarding illness. However, if he wants to ring we will offer any husbandry advice he needs, or if more needed then we can sort something out!!

Thanks both of you for your swift replies, and the fact sheet is brilliant Mark!

Embarrassingly we're not really set up for hospitalisation of exotics, not even a heat lamp, and I'm not sure how comprehensive my care would be with my limited experience. Speaking to the owner he is keen to do as much as possible. I'm happy to try and give things a go, though the concern is I won't be giving gold standard care, especially without any equipment!

Gillian, I'm sorry to be cheeky and ask this, but you're our local specialist practice - do you mind if I give him your number to call?

Yep - the tortie needs some diagnostics doing to find out what's wrong. Just remember that PHA is a symptom, not a disease - the same as anorexia in any species.
